How does this calculate inverter size?

It adds your running appliance watts and applies extra headroom so the inverter is not sized too tightly.

Why use 500W panels?

500W panels are a common modern panel size. You can change the panel wattage if your supplier offers a different rating.

Why does battery type matter?

Lead-acid batteries should usually not be drained deeply, while lithium batteries can often use more of their rated capacity. That changes the estimated battery count.
